The capital city of Colombia has an attractive old part and modern commercial area.
An attractive town with a large central square north of Bogotá.
Visits were made to the neighboring countryside to a view point,
to see an ancient stone astronomy site and an impressive pre-historic marine fossil,
as well as the firework festival.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira
A replacement caved out from the solid rock salt after the original was declared unsafe. The cave can hold an impressive 8400 people.
A day trip was made to Tayrona National Park, a beautiful forest which borders a stunning beach.
This was the highlight of the trip . A beautiful old city.
Beside wandering through the ancient streets
visits were made to the fort, Castillo de San Felipe,
the convent,
Volcan de Lodo El Totumo, a 15 meter volcano that spews mud instead of ash,
and a tour of the bay by yacht.
Visits included
the Botero museum, the famous Christmas Lights, La Majoria for an evening of traditional Colombian entertainment.
This tropical town has changed little since the 18th century.
A visit was made to the Los Nevados National Park where some of us climbed up to the rim of a 4875m crater in the snow.
There was the opportunity to make two horse rides and walks in this coffee growing area.
